Hatfield & Askern Colliery Band took the first steps toward setting up a player development pipeline in January 2022.\u00a0 Initial funding was provided by the (then) Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council to provide a selection of plastic instruments for the recruits and, under the tutelage of Vicki Kennedy, the first year saw 8 students progress towards the Junior Band level, at which point they will transfer to brass instruments.\u00a0 Plans to open up a pipeline for percussionists are also in hand and the first fledgling drummers should be bashing out a rhythm in the course of 2023.<\/p>\n

Recruiting to the training and junior levels stepped up in 2023 with the first “‘Ave-a-Go” session taking place in Doncaster’s Wool Market on Sunday 22nd January 2023.\u00a0 Invitations were sent out to numerous youth and children’s groups in the area, to bring in aspiring youngsters and oldsters alike, to sample the buzz of mouthpiece on lips and see how their interest might blossom.<\/p>\n
